Cycling has been a pastime of mine for many years. Since about 1987 I own this Rixe bike. Sturdily built, six speed Shimano gear switch (translation 13,15,18,20,23,26 : 46), Altenburger Superstop brakes (brake just as well when wet as under dry conditions, great!)

Of course this is not really a racing bike, and I don't manage average speeds of 30km/h (19mph) or more, but I like to cycle swiftly and even fast when safety permits. Each summer I notice how the training improves my performance.

My cycling trips - this file is maintained on my computer at home and only uploaded every now and then, so don't expect it to be current!

Handy Hints for good speed average

• When arriving at the top of a hill and going down again, just give the pedals a few more turns before relaxing. This increases speed on the downward journey.
• When overtaken by a car or lorry, try to gain speed from the supporting wind it creates after passing. You can easily gain 2 to 4 km/h and it lasts a while until this is worn off again.
• When going downhill, or when facing adverse wind, it is particularly beneficial to bow down your body, even if you are not normally in the habit of doing so.
